How It Works
Mean
The mean (what most people call "the average") is the sum of all values divided by how many values there are.
Median and mode
The median is the middle value when all numbers are sorted (or the average of the two middle values for an even-length list). The mode is the value(s) that appear most often.
Example Calculation
For the list 2, 4, 4, 6, 8: the mean is 4.8, the median is 4, and the mode is 4 (it appears twice).
Common Mistakes
- Assuming the mean and median are always close together — a few extreme values (outliers) can pull the mean far from the median.
- Forgetting a list can have more than one mode, or no mode at all if every value is unique.
- Not sorting the list before finding the median by hand — order matters for this one.
Frequently Asked Questions
- When should I use median instead of mean?
- The median is more resistant to outliers — for data like household income or home prices, where a few extreme values can skew the mean, the median often gives a more representative "typical" value.
- Can a data set have no mode?
- Yes — if every value appears exactly once, there's no meaningful mode. This calculator returns an empty result in that case rather than picking an arbitrary value.
