How It Works
Converting to decimal odds
Each leg's American odds are converted to decimal odds first — positive odds become 1 + odds/100, negative odds become 1 + 100/|odds|.
Combining the legs
The decimal odds for every leg are multiplied together to get the combined odds — this is why parlays can pay out so much more than a single bet, but also why every leg must win.
Example Calculation
Two legs at -110 each combine to about 3.64 decimal odds — a $100 bet pays out roughly $364 if both legs win.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting that every single leg of a parlay must win — losing even one leg loses the entire bet.
- Underestimating how quickly combined odds add risk — more legs means a much lower overall chance of winning despite the bigger payout.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What are American odds?
- Positive odds (like +150) show how much you'd win on a $100 bet. Negative odds (like -150) show how much you'd need to bet to win $100.
- Does adding more legs always increase the payout?
- Yes, the potential payout grows with each added leg, but the probability of winning the whole parlay shrinks multiplicatively, since every leg has to hit.
