How It Works

Standard deduction

A standard deduction is subtracted from your income first — only income above that amount is actually taxable.

Progressive tax brackets

Taxable income is taxed in layers: each bracket's rate only applies to the portion of income within that bracket, not your entire income — this is why your effective tax rate is lower than your top marginal rate.

Example Calculation

A single filer earning $20,000 pays no tax on the first $14,600 (standard deduction), leaving $5,400 taxed at 10% — about $540 in total federal tax.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming your entire income is taxed at your top bracket's rate — only the income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.
  • Forgetting this simplified estimate ignores tax credits, itemized deductions, and other income adjustments that could change your real tax bill.
  • Confusing this federal-only estimate with your total tax burden, which also includes state/local tax and payroll taxes (see the Salary Calculator).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an exact calculation of what I'll owe?
No — this uses simplified, approximate federal tax brackets and only the standard deduction. It's meant for a quick estimate, not as a substitute for a tax professional or filing software.
What's the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
Your marginal rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of income (your top bracket). Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your total income, which is always lower because of progressive brackets and the standard deduction.
Does this include state income tax?
No, this estimates federal income tax only. Use the Salary Calculator to also factor in a state/local tax rate along with Social Security and Medicare.
