How It Works

Grade points

Each letter grade corresponds to a point value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on), following the standard US 4.0 scale.

Weighting by credit hours

GPA is a weighted average: each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours, summed up, then divided by the total credit hours — so a 4-credit class affects your GPA more than a 1-credit class.

Example Calculation

An A (4.0) in a 3-credit class and a B (3.0) in a 1-credit class gives a GPA of (4.0×3 + 3.0×1) ÷ 4 = 3.75.

Common Mistakes

  • Averaging grade points without weighting by credit hours, which overweights small classes and underweights large ones.
  • Forgetting that grading scales (4.0 vs. other scales, plus/minus grades) can vary between schools — check your institution's exact scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this include plus/minus grades?
Yes — common plus/minus grade point values (like A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3) are included, matching the most widely used version of the 4.0 scale.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA across multiple semesters?
Enter every course from every semester you want included — the calculation naturally works the same way whether it's one semester or your entire academic record.
