How It Works
Volume from area and depth
Mulch volume = area × depth. A typical recommended mulch depth is 2-4 inches — thinner layers wear out and weed-suppress poorly, while much thicker layers waste material and can smother plant roots.
Bag count
Standard mulch bags hold 2 cubic feet, so bags needed = total cubic feet ÷ 2, rounded up to the next whole bag.
Example
A 100 sq ft garden bed at a 3-inch depth needs 25 cubic feet of mulch — about 0.93 cubic yards, or 13 standard bags.
Common Mistakes
- Buying mulch by weight or by a vague guess instead of calculating actual volume needed for the area and desired depth.
- Applying mulch too deep against tree trunks or plant stems, which can trap moisture and encourage rot.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is it cheaper to buy mulch in bags or bulk (by the cubic yard)?
- For larger projects, buying in bulk cubic yards from a landscaping supplier is usually significantly cheaper per cubic foot than buying many individual bags.
- How often should mulch be replaced?
- Organic mulch typically breaks down and needs topping up or replacing every 1-2 years, depending on the material and climate.
